Pewfell is a humorous comic book sitcom set on the medieval fantasy world of Urf. It stars irresponsible wizard Pewfell, his wife Tina the warrior princess wife, and Gnoma, a small blue pest who squats in their sideboard. Pewfell's a bit of a slacker, but he scratches out a living selling potions and, when things get really desperate, going on adventures.

Pewfell: The Comic Fantasy Comic

In this first issue: Meet Pewfell, a slacker wizard who lives in the fabulous city of Spirekassle. He's married to Tina the warrior princess and works a day job in a local pharmacy. When Tina has to take a month off due to a shortage of orc settlements to pillage, Pewfell must find other ways to supplement his income...

Pewfell is written, illustrated and published by me, Chuck Whelon, with additional material by my occasional co-writer Adam Prosser. I started the strip as a way to draw the things I love and it has evolved and improved over the years as I've mastered the craft of making comics. It's very silly and kind of anarchic. It contains mild sexual innuendo, gratuitously graphic violence, magical component abuse and generally inappropriate behavior. So, consider yourself warned.

This first issue is a compilation of some of my earliest work on the strip, retroactively edited together to form a general overview of the characters and setting. Not much plot here, just some short stories and one-off gags. If you like it, the series continues in much the same vein over the next 3 issues. Then the plot starts building, with issues #5-14 forming one epic story arc, and issues #15-20 another. The latest story arc, entitled "Green Achers", begins in issue #21.

Pewfell began as a self-published 'zine in the 1990s, and became a daily webcomic around the year 2000. In 2001 it was picked up by professional webcomics portal, which is where the material from issue# 9 onwards first appeared. A series of black & white print editions were put out by Wingnut Games in the early 2000's. Color print editions are now also available from Planet Urf Entertanment and here on DriveThru.

Pewfell is still ongoing, and new issues are added here on DriveThru as they are completed. For the very latest strips, become a Pewfell patron at and you'll get to see the newest episodes a couple of months before anyone else.

I am also the creator of the boardgame 'Legitimacy', published by Minion Games, available here on DriveThru in a Print-on-Demand Edition. I've illustrated a bunch of other boardgames for Minion, including 'Those Pesky Humans', 'Tahiti', 'Grave Business', 'Battle Merchants' & 'Nile'. I also did all the cartoons for Goodman Games' Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG rulebook, and a bunch of artwork for several of their DCCRPG modules. Click the names to find them here on DriveThru.

Solid laughs, funny characters, and ludicrous plot points from start to finish.

This free introduction to the series is fun, with some setting ideas worth grabbing too. I don't know the history of this comic at all, but some odd layout towards the end almost suggests they've brought together some shorter strips and wrapped an extende [...]

Very funny stuff! I've got this and the next four issues now...looking forward to digging for more. The PDF edition is a good clean read; if you like Groo, KotD, Robert Aspirin or even Thrud, then you'll like Pewfell, too. [...]

This was a very pleasant surprise. The format, alternating between long-form stories and shorter, 4-panel gags, really worked for me. The artist's style reminds me of classic Bode-family 70's era comic fantasy, but with a somewhat more modern touch added [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
