Accessible Guide to RPG Layout
by Michael I. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/26/2023 23:23:17

Some good general advice, but too heavily focused on Indesign tips for my purposes. There are also a few obvious typos that hurt the presentation a bit. I'd say about 50% still has something useful for an absolute novice like me that is never going to buy Indesign though

Fire Starters: 10 Adventure Seeds to Spark Your Cyberpunk Campaign
by Saif A. E. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/20/2021 04:50:10

This is good stuff, the structure of the seeds are useful for one alone to create his own following this design. However some of the ideas are a bit lazy. Can't share much but the complication of one of the seeds is that players will be tempted to drink or gamble (just because the mission is fit on a casino).

Thoughtful and well written articles everyone in the gaming community should read. A good balance of op-eds alongside reviews and an awesome, system neutral characer build suitable for PC or NPC. First issue presents perspectives regarding visual imparement and mobility, looking forward to seeing even more representation from accessible gamers- especially players experienced with Spectrum disorders, language processing challenges, and intersectional identities.

Game Publishing Lessons
by Chuck D. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 02/23/2016 09:56:16

One of the best resources for the indie game developer looking to create a commercially produced product. It's not a guidebook nor a hard and fast ruleset, but rather a list of lessons learned the hard way. Those kinds of lessons are difficult to come by without scrapes and bruises, so it is very much appreciated that he is willing to part with them for this price.

It's formatted very conversationally, but this helps to convey complex and frankly frightening concepts in a very approachable manner. Before reading this, I'd been stymied in how to continue to get my ideas into print. Now I feel like I can do it- it's still going to be hard work, and I'm sure I will make mistakes. But this makes the process not as opaque as it was before I read the book.

Worth it at 10x the price - experience can't easily be measured in monetary terms, but it's definitely worth $4.95 and more!

Psi-punk
by David L. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/15/2014 23:06:31

I love cyberpunk games but a lot of those will either drown you in complex rules with deep, uneven subsystems (I'm looking at you, Shadowrun!) or will get hand-wavey in the name of simplicity (eg. all Fate implementations I've seen to date).

I Kickstarted this game and now I'm seriously in love with Psi-Punk. The Fudge system really strikes a nice middle ground on the matter of crunch with simple, unified mechanics. The trait ladder makes it easy for GMs to set challenge difficulties appropriately and quickly come up with new bad guys ("That guy's probably Great with an assault rifle!"). Character creation is simple and flexible. Psionics are powerful but costly, just as I expect them to be. "Magic" (which are really electronic devices emulating psi powers) somewhat offsets psionics and gives everyone a fighting chance. Everything is so simple and fast (the weapon reloading mechanics alone are pure gold).

In fact, the game practically begs you to customize every weapon, piece of armor or any gizmo, really, through Gifts/Faults. Need a unreliable car that uses ESP instead of a GPS? No problem. A mind controlling gun that works only with YOUR fingerprints? Go ahead. Laser-shooting sports car that drops ice slicks? It's gonna cost ya, but sure. Anti-psi armor? Wow, that would be so OP... so yeah, sure, why not.

The only somewhat weak spot I found was cybernetics creation. Some sample cyberware is provided and given as guidelines to create your own and that's all you get. Vehicles, for instance, get very clear rules to determine their cost. Having rules just as clear for cybernetics creation would've been nice but then I'm just nitpicking here.

Game Publishing Lessons
by Stu V. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/27/2013 11:56:31

Game Publishing Lessons is a collection of articles about publishing your own games, some from the RPGGeek community, and some from the author.

I equate this book with having the opportunity to sit down with someone who's gone through the process and being able to ask them all sorts of questions, and Jacob Wood does a good job of anticipating the sort of information a would-be publisher will need to know.

Some of the information won't be evergreen (specifically info on publishing software and some web resources), but if you're looking to publish a game and you don't know some who has (so you can bend his or her ear for an hour) this book is a good start.

Fire Starters: 10 Adventure Seeds to Spark Your Cyberpunk Campaign
by David L. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/09/2013 21:32:44

I'm seriously impressed by Fire Starters. This is EXACTLY the kind of product I'm interested in buying : I seriously hate railroaded adventures like the ones I see all around on Drivethru RPG, for instance (no offense to anyone!). On the other hand, I'm the kind of guy who has a difficult time finding these "sparks" but once I've got a hold of one, I'm off for a multi-session killing spree. The format - Background, Complication, Conclusion, Follow-Through - makes it easy to read and using Fudge terms to describe things is just brilliant in terms of game-agnosticity (and for use with Psi-Punk, obviously!)

Psi-punk
by Janne J. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 10/19/2013 04:22:34

I got this book as a hardcover print, my first print on demand order. The first thing I have to say that the quality of the physical product is amazing.

The actual content, though, is a bit uneven. It seems that at least parts of this book should have gone through a few more cycles of editing. The writing style is convoluted at times, to the point that it feels like it was written by a non-native English user.

That being said, there are some great ideas in the game. Even with the partly rushed delivery, elements of the setting inspired and excited me, and that's the most important thing I look for in any RPG book.
