Black Dog and Rebel Rose #0 by Dani Smith
Review
Artist Dani Smith has created a formidable pair, two fighters against supernatural evil. This introductory comic is beautifully conceived, drawn, and executed. Ms. Smith uses just the right balance of illustrations and dialogue. The color pallet is rich and deep with resonance, telling a graphic story without overuse of violence “just because.” The principal characters are imbued with human traits, both nobility and failings, which brings verisimilitude to the story. Too many supernatural graphic comics stretch reality so much that any identification with the characters is impossible. But Ms. Smith achieves a connection to the reader that’s often rare in this genre. Her drawings are also not flat and 2-dimensional. She rotates the audience field of view constantly to achieve a 3-dimensional effect. This technique draws the reader into the story. I look forward to more of her graphic novel art.
