Would be nice if they added a softcover POD option.

Played this with friends recently. We puzzled over when you would need the "Artisan" skill instead of the "Visual Arts" skill, and why the game included some other seemingly super niche skills, while looking for the missing "Perception" skill or any skill related to deceiving people (ie: telling lies or bluffing). The skill/attribute system doesn't make a lot of sense, and seems like it could use more polish to put things that are learned and improved through repetition (ie: skills) and character background things like knowing people at the pentagon, and even gear things like what armor you wear, from things like breathing fire, teleportation or mind control. Attributes (not at all what you would expect from the name) include all of those, but not things like Body, Mind and Soul (which pretty much every other RPG calls attributes) or other skills which thankfully are actually called skills. It seems anything related to combat is an "attribute" for the sole purpose of limiting...See more

Is it just me or is this small book ridiculously overpriced? It's a shame because I'd really like to get it, but I'd kinda feel like a sucker if I paid that much money for it.

The book's about 240 pages long - this isn't the old Guardians of Order book, it's a lushly illustrated, full color hardback. It's super nice. I mean, yeah, it's a little pricy, but it's not outrageous for what it is.

THis is coming from someone who only has the PDF, though.

I have a copy from the initial White Wolf print run; it was $40 US at the time (2007). It's a full-sized, full-color book. It's currently listed here at $66. I'd call that on the high side, but not overpriced. Especially considering you don't need other books (to compare to D&D, it's a combination of the PH & DMG, with a sprinkling of MM).

If you like anime/manga, and don't mind a little math during character creation (more than most games these days, but it's certainly not GURPS or anything), I recommend it.

I think having a softcover option for POD would be great. I tend to keep multiple copies on hand and a stack of hardcover is fine but I like options and softcover is more friendly to thumbing back and forth.

Yeah it actually is small enough to be bound in a paperback, as i have larger paperbacks from the print on demand service here that are still holding up quite well despite the glue binding and heavy use.

Anyone ordered this in the past only to find they don't have it in their library despite having an copy with a watermarked order number?

Any idea on if the BESM splats from 1st and 2nd are compatible with the 3rd Ed book? Specifically wondering about Big Robots, Cool Starships.

Thanks!

It's all been rolled into one update package minus any setting fluff which is universal, making a conversion of the supplement is easy enough

Anyone know if the POD quality has improved?

I would like to second that question as I don't like the idea of buying a book that's going to fall apart in a stiff breeze.

Any possibility of a non-premium POD version? I have the original printed version but would just like a table copy (hopefully with errata incorporated).

I have asked the same question since the hardcover (glued pages) isn't usable as a table book.

Well, I got a print on demand copy of the BESM 3rd and I am REALLY disappointed. The paper is matte (not glossy) and the colors are WASHED out compared to the original book. Also, the binding is just glue, with no stitching at all. This thing will fall apart in no time. What a waste of money.

While this binding is okay for softcovers, I expected more for a hardcover. I will put in on my shelf and just keep using my pdfs and original book (the POD version was supposed to be my tabletop copy - not happening.

Thanks for the warning on the poor quality hardcover version!

An alternative you might consider, once you have the PDF file in hand, is to look up FedEx/Kinko's. You can upload the PDF to their printing website and they can print a two-sided copy in black & white with color cover for about $30. This should be fine for game table use. I'd get it with the comb or spiral binding which will then lie open flat on the table. Or just use the PDF on a lap-top. One advantage of the PDF is that you can annotate the PDF using any number of PDF Viewers which is like being able to add sticky notes to your electronic document. The other advantage is Bookmarking, which can create a table of useful locations in the book, like an electronic table of contents that you can organize to suit yourself.

One thing I forgot to mention about this PDF is that it is not scanned page images, it was actually printed directly to PDF. This means that you can search the document in a PDF Viewer as text, or copy text into a word processing document if you wanted to.

Indeed! If you are VERY LUCKY you might find a hardcover copy of the original for $60.00 on eBay but good luck! I's now considered a "collectors' item" so sells for over US$100. I was extraordinarily lucky to find one on eBay for about $40 + shipping.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
