The Anime Hack

The Anime Hack brings the frantic energy of Japanese animation to the tabletop in an easy to play multi-genre role playing game based on the fantastic Black Hack RPG. Based on the original 1970s fantasy role-playing game the rules are easy to follow and playable right out of the box. Character creation takes a few minutes and you'll be playing in no time.

The Anime Hack adds anime flavour, mecha and vehicle rules as well as advice for GMs and players alike who want to play in a world of over-sized eyes, giant robots, katanas, ninjas, weaponized mallets and collectable monsters.

Choose between eight anime inspired classes: Magical Girl/Boy, Mecha Jockey, Monster Collector, Neko, Ninja, Robot, Trenchcoat Samurai, and Wunderkind.

This is a complete game. The Black Hack is not required, but it is awesome and would add a lot to your experience (in life as well as gaming).

Everything needed to swing katanas and go "over 9000" is right here in 45 pages of adventure.

Written and illustrated by David Okum, author of Cold Hands, Dark Hearts, and numerous "How to Draw Manga" books for Penguin Random House.

I saw this comment in the review section: "There is an error in the Monster Collector class. The first special feature is a duplicate of the Mecha Jockey's special feature, meaning the first special feature of the Monster Collector does not currently exist." Was that error corrected?

I don't see that issue on the current pdf. I have my physical copies elsewhere at the moment so I will check to make sure it's not an error with the physical book.

Hi Marco. I'm so sorry I missed this. I don't get notifications of Discussions, just Reviews. Is there any change? Did you contact the folks at DTRPG?

My girlfriend loved Inuyasha anime. I'd like to play that setting with her using some rules-lite RPG. Is this hack good for a legendary/fantasy Sengoku game?

So sorry for the delay on the POD of this. There have been some technical issues that needed fixing.

The book explains how experience points are accumulated, but not how that is connected with leveling up, unless I am just missing that line repeatedly.

Awesome. I find proofreading is never perfect until after it matters. Perfect example, I misspelled Black Hack as Black Hat in my review and did not realize until after the editing window had close -_-;

I'm just happy to feel like I have contributed to the game in this tiny way.

Just to clarify, you roll for less than your target, and matching it misses; am I right? I've seen it done that way before to good effect, so it would make sense like that. Really it will work either way, though the equal or less than score variant would be a slightly more lax seeming game, I'm guessing.

I always see it as "roll under" and equal is a fail. I think either way would work as long as you were consistent and up front at the beginning of the game.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
