Standard Deck Dungeon

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Standard Deck Dungeon is a free card game that simulates the experience of a roguelike dungeon crawler, using nothing but a standard deck of playing cards. You only need a standard deck of playing cards with the rulebook and two reference sheets (PDFs).

Standard Deck Dungeon is designed to be setup quickly, played quickly, and packed away quickly. It supports single player, two player cooperative, or two player competitive. The rulebook has lore that sets the backstory for the game.

Great little game that's easy to set up and takes about 15-30 minutes to play. All you need is one deck of standard playing cards and optionally a button or something to serve as a token. It's written for 1 or 2 PCs, but you could add 2 additional PCs by adding another deck of cards. The red cards (hearts, diamonds) are the PC's hit points, items, and abilities, and the black cards (clubs, spades) are the dungeon rooms. You flip cards, one at a time, and each card corresponds to a different type of room (secret passage, monster, dead end, treasure, exit, etc.), where you may have to resolve a trap or encounter before being able to proceed through that room. Each session also randomly generates a set of specific goals the PCs must complete before they can exit the dungeon and go back to their queen. Fun stuff, will be playing again, suitable for younger players too.

I agree that the theme could be easily changed to fit a different genre. amesGames doesn't currently plan to release a different format of SDD using a new theme. If anything something like "Standard Deck Dungeon Deluxe" might happen someday, adding a single player campaign to this game with a more developed plot. At this time though, amesGames is working on developing "Otherside of the Obelisk". Thank you for your interest.

I don't see OGL content anywhere in the rules, but would you mind if someone else did a different genre, so long as they gave you credit for the original idea?

By all means amesGames hopes that others will use the concept behind Standard Deck Dungeon and evolve upon it. This framework could easily be used in a different genre. amesGames would appreciate credit for the original concept certainly. Thanks for your interest.

I see a lot of potential in this game. By changing the backstory, the items, and the encounters, any fantasy race or class could go on an adventure as tame or harrowing as desired. To do science fiction think "Aliens" or "Space Hulk". Low-powered costumed vigilantes could have fun as well, I think, but if I'm running a Batman I have to include a Joker.

So how about it, Mr. Ames? Any plans for more adventures and other genres?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
