100 Festival Delights for a Curious Adventurer

Welcome to 100 Festival Delights for a Curious Adventurer – a fascinating list of fun and exciting activities a weary adventurer can enjoy when coming to a town just in time for one of its seasonal festivals.

Many fantasy campaigns end up in a town or tavern between adventures. Rather than just have this portion of your campaign be nothing more than a check mark, a pause if you will, between two quests, why not liven it up and make it memorable?

All it takes is a fun festival for your party to experience to give them a welcome break from the grueling fighting and exploring of filth covered caves, slime infested dungeons and monsters lurking behind every corner. For instance, your party can experience festival amusement #36

Enter a lumberjack contest to see who can best carve a huge section of tree into a recognizable piece of art. You and five other competitors will each be given 30 minutes to carve a massive log into a beautiful work of art. Each of you are allowed to pick any tools you want from a nearby table to complete your work. The winner gets a trophy and the proceeds of the sale of his artwork if it gets bought before the end of the festival.

While it is on the surface a fun event meant to challenge a player’s skill with axes and similar tools, it can be much more. Suppose the player won? Will the local champion the past five years running get his boys together to show the player what they think of him or her stealing his rightful trophy? Or will it start a long and enduring friendship started over a few mugs of beer?

Or diversion #74

Fairs are a great time to socialize. Everyone is there to have fun and are in a good mood. It is an excellent time to make new friends in town – perhaps even with that special someone you’ve been watching from afar.

This is a great way for the DM to have players bump into NPCs that will be important to them in the future, perhaps the very near future. It gives a social reason for meeting rather than an awkward forced situation. Also, it gives the chance for love to bloom (or wither) if that is the inclination of the party.

This list can be used to either choose a random romp by rolling a D100 (or 2 D10’s) or by actively choosing a particular event to fit a particular campaign setting or goal.

So what are you waiting for?

Take any item on the list, apply a little imagination and let the action unfold.

May all your adventures be spectacular!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
