The last survivors of the raid on the Barrow of Azharad find themselves slipping further and further into webs of danger and intrigue. Erim, carrying a special burden, finds death behind the pleasant facade of the Tournament of Flowers; Godewyn Red-Hand enters into the service of men of power and ill intent; Stjepan Black-Heart walks high trails in the wild hills of the Manon Mole; and Annwyn of the Black Tower receives a visitor who is not what he seems.

BLACK HEART—the sequel to THE BARROW, itself a prequel to the ARTESIA graphic novels—will be released digitally in three parts, of which this is the second: IN THE COILS OF A HORNED SERPENT.

Includes illustrated chapter breaks. WARNING: Contains graphic violence and sexual situations.

File Formats available include PDF and ePUB.

The epub version is epub 3 not the more usual epub 2. Every single word has it's own style which explains the excessive file size (the html encoding is at least 10:1 against the text). I suspect a bad export from whatever the publishing software was as even epub 3 with illustrations should not be this bloated.

My apologies, I will reexport with epub 2 settings and repost, should be up later today.

Thanks Mark, much appreciated. The epub 3 file actually worked in iBooks (using my iPad), but I dislike reading in iBooks - I find the user interface very clunky and much prefer reading on my Kobo. Quite apart from that, it's half the weight of my iPad and much more comfortable to hold for a long time.

Glad that file is working better for you on the Kobo! I review the ePub file output in iBooks so the ePub 3 version had looked fine from my end.

It's worth downloading Calibre (it's free - https://calibre-ebook.com/) and checking the output in the built-in ebook viewer (I use it to manage my ebook library). When I loaded the ePub 3 version into the viewer, it proved impossible to change the font size - it just blurred together instead. The large margins in the viewer meant the text was squeezed into a small box in the middle of a lot of white space and wasn't comfortable to read. Anyway, the ePub 2 works fine - it flows correctly and resizes to fit the window. (Checking the file using the Calibre editor was what alerted me to the issue of every single word having it's own style.)

Ah! Actually that I can explain in that the ePub3 version is indeed a fixed layout version to preserve the font formatting, page breaks, illustrations, etc. So if you prefer to change the font size when reading then yes the ePub2 version will allow resizing (it's a "flowable" file vs a "fixed layout" file).

There is a major problem with the epub - apart from the excessive file size, it's not flowing correctly - in fact, it looks and feels more like a pdf. I tried running it through an epub to epub conversion and it took 18 hours to complete and the result was unreadable.

The Contact Us button below does not work - it logs out.

Hi!
Big fan of your work here.
Will the complete novel (Parts I-II-III) be available on print on Drivethru or elsewhere sometimes in the future?
Thanks in advance for your answer.

There will be a print edition, at minimum a DriveThru POD or possibly a Kickstarter version; I've also had a couple of conversations with possible publishers so a more traditional route might eventually be possible.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
