Root: The Roleplaying Game

ADD TO WISHLIST >

War has returned to the woodland!

The Marquise de Cat led her armies to victory over many of the clearings, but the Eyrie Dynasties rise again to oppose her. Meanwhile, the mice, rabbits, and foxes of the Woodland do not sit idly by—the Woodland Alliance, a homegrown rebellion, has emerged, promising to free the Woodland from any oppressors.

In the midst of this war, you and your friends—vagabonds all—travel between the clearings, taking on jobs no one else can or will do. You choose whom you serve, if anyone...but everyone knows you may tip the balance of the War.

Root: The Roleplaying Game is the officially-licensed tabletop RPG based on the award-winning Root: A Game of Woodland Might and Right board game by Leder Games. In Root: The RPG, you play vagabonds, individual outlaws whose adventures and alliances define the Woodland forever.

Root: The RPG contains:

  • Nine unique playbooks, each built to help you create a vagabond whose exploits will echo in the Woodland for generations to come.
  • Easy-to-follow rules for all manner of fantasy adventure, including roguish feats, reputation and travel mechanics, and more.
  • Innovative mechanics for managing equipment, weapons, and combat that make your choices matter both tactically and narratively.
  • Detailed instructions for running Root: The RPG—crafting combats, managing factions, and more—alongside a full clearing, Gelilah’s Grove.

Root: The RPG is a fantasy adventure tabletop roleplaying game for three to six players of woodland creatures fighting for money, justice, and freedom from powers far greater than them. Fame and glory await!

Feels shockingly incomplete, which is disappointing given Magpie's reputation.

The value/wear and reputation economies are fundamental parts of the game with lots of specific costs and thresholds, yet the book doesn't seem to have any GM advice on how much to give out! There's a seven-table quest generator but it doesn't list any numerical rewards.

Likewise, there's a playbook focused on finding and exploring ruins yet no advice on how to create and run them. Everything else revolves around factions and clearings.

I checked some discussion threads and learned there IS a reputation reward table...but only if you pay another $25 plus shipping for the GM screen. Why is that not in the book?

Other than the fact that they looked at the phrase "why use many word when few word do trick" and decided to go the complete opposite direction of that, this is a REALLY great game even if it is unnecessarily wordy.

It's a ton of fun, with lots of nitty gritty rules for longer running campaigns, but still sits in a good place of action & adventure that works really well for short campaigns.

You can run this as kid friendly, the book fully supports it, but it also supports more violent adult games. The juxtaposition the players being a fluffy forest creatures interacting with other cute and cuddly forest creatures and then the next thing you know you're trying to hide a body on a roof top... and maybe setting it on fire for good measure, just makes a for a really fun RPG.

For the printer-friendly play materials, under Reputation Moves, "Sway an NPC" is misaligned at the bottom left of the page instead of next to the move where it should be.

How does the full game differ from the quickstart?

A preview would be nice :)

It's basically just more fleshed out and in-depth. The quickstart is essentially the "preview" of the full rules :)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
