Legends of Excalibur: Arthurian Adventures HC
by Timothy B. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 03/05/2011 22:08:34

I picked this up at the same time I did the True20 version. This is one of the best Arthurian legends games I have read in a good long time. The text is very readable, the layout is very well done and the maps are fantastic. The use of the d20 system here is nice, but lacks the elegance of the True20 version. You do get a number of very good feats and prestige classes here though so that evens it out some. If you are a fan of Arthur in any of it's many re-tellings then this is a fantastic game to own.

Legends of the Dark Ages
by Timothy B. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 03/02/2011 14:10:43

Great game using d20 and set in a realistic Europe after the Fall of the Roman Empire. Plenty of classes and feats to keep players happy. Great background material and maps and the book is also very nicely laid out. If you are looking for gritty, no magic setting or to add some of this to your own game then this is great choice. Almost worth the price for the maps alone.

Legends of Excalibur: Arthurian Adventures (True20)
by Timothy B. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 01/24/2011 21:04:24

Legends of Excalibur, True20 edition. This conversion of the very, very good d20 edition is also very, very good. In some ways I prefer it since it takes much of the d20 overhead and trims it out. Instead we are now focused on a game that strives to emulate Arthurian Legends with a very tight and neat system. Everything in the d20 version is also here, so this is not a "trimmed down" version of anything except rules. Maybe some of the unique flavor is lost (no prestige classes or new magic systems), but they are all there expressed in terms of the True20 system, so what would have been a class in d20 is now a background feat in true20. I think the system works well in presenting that low fantasy, high romance feel that one often associates with Arthur too. In the end I think the True20 version works better than the d20 one.

Burning Lands: A Darwin's World Novel
by W. D. S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/18/2010 11:55:44

Overall the story is good and I'm a big fan of post-apoc. fiction & gaming. It certainly provided more flavor & background for Darwin's World. However, the book is extremely wordy. There are over 400 pages and individual chapters are dozens of pages long. Sometimes the action is a bit slow & I think post-apoc. fiction, especially Darwin's World, should be more fast-paced. I recommend breaking the book down into smaller chapters and editing it to move the action along faster.

Modern Dispatch (#83): Dramatis Personae: Roaring 20?s

A well-considered selection of characters to describe. The Prophecy rules look very interesting, though raise some minor mechanical questions for me.

Legends of the Dark Ages
by Spencer H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/24/2010 22:07:59

(I wrote a long detailed review, but the site timed me out I lost it, so ...)

Good: several alternate character classes suited for a humans-only, low-magic setting.

Good: 14-page summary of the history of Europe from the fall of Rome until the end of the reign of Charlemagne.

Good: production values (layout, interior art, maps, etc).

Interesting: alternate character origins ("bloodlines"), alternative to alignment system ("nobility").

Possibly interesting (YMMV): alternate spellcasting classes and spellpoint system (I skimmed it a couple minutes only, as not needed for my current game).

Summary: a solid product with good production values, but nothing jumped out at me enough to want to rate it a 5, but NOTE I am highly familiar with the historical period and basically 1/4 of the main PDF covers stuff I already knew. That's more of a value-per-price type of issue though, not a reflection on the quality of the material itself.

Two Worlds Tabletop RPG
by Robert G. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/12/2010 11:05:43

This is actually a cute and useful little game in a very compact form. I can't wholeheartedly endorse it over other options, considering the lack of campaign support, but you should definitely check it out if you are a fan of d20-style fantasy RPGs. It includes three core classes, point-based magic, and a number of monsters drawn from the computer game on which it is based.

Modern Mayhem
by William G. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 02/25/2010 23:39:53

EXCELLENT!

An outstanding product worthy of having even if you do not play d20 modern - an excellent example of how to write and present a fast paced and fluid adventure. The Heat meter is well supported throughout the adventure, and gives a sense of cause and effect to the characters actions - often lacking in traditional "dungeon hacks". The Humanity score for determining the ending is a novel and entertaining idea that the players will appreciate - giving them input into how the adventure progresses and letting them know that they have an effect on the world around them.

Read the previous reviews for more detailed information about what is inside.

LIKED: Well written and presented. Excellent artwork. Very well put together.

DISLIKED: Nothing.

QUALITY: Excellent.

VALUE: Very Satisfied
