Critical 10: Play Test Version
Publisher: Strike Amount Studio
by Bob V. G. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 09/19/2023 18:32:16

Recently, I soloed my way through an adventure that was included in MOADESTAR WIP (34 pages, free/pay what you want at DriveThruRPG). It is a fun adventure for Critical 10: Play Test Version (46 pages, same price and place). To create my solo engine, I changed four lines in The Anime Hack (46 pages, same place). I created six characters. They work for MIB and can be teleported to different multiverses and back in time. Their first mission sent them to a medieval world. They were never given a good reason why for this particular mission, but they did get some details in the briefing.

The adventure started them off in a grassy field. They were dressed in the clothing and armor of the time except for Katina. She insisted on wearing her steampunk cosplay outfit. They saw some smoke off in the distance, so that is where they went. This brought them to the village of Treymon. They talked to the guard and had to pay to get in. Inside the walled village, they received more details about the goblin raids on caravans. After this, it was getting late so they spent the night in the village. In the morning they went to the site of the ambushes and found some clues. The PC Combs set up a trap and then they waited for the goblins. After it got dark, they heard the sound of the trap going off. It had captured a goblin which was hanging by his ankle. The battle started. The PCs killed thirteen goblins, but Katina went down. Combs used his smoke grenade and the PCs escaped with Katina. They spent the night at the village so that they could recover from their wounds.

On Day 3, they went back to the battle site and then followed the goblin trail back to the goblin cave. Ragnar killed five goblins with his grenade. The goblins retreated further back into their cave. Katina set up her C4 at the cave entrance. When a goblin went to check it out, she blew him up. At this point, the only goblins left alive in the cave were females and children. The PCs explained to them why the battle happened. They had to communicate with gestures and dirt diagrams. The PCs then went back to the village. Prad the PC explained to the villagers what had happened and then got them involved in a game of cards. As he was getting ready to collect his earnings (copper pieces), the PCs were teleported out. Prad was not happy.

Give this RPG a try!

SC5 Hellflower

Date Added: 09/15/2023 20:43:08

Spoilers – You have been warned - For the past few days, I have soloed my way through SC5 Hellflower (20 pages, free at DriveThruRPG). It is for Barbarians of Lemuria Legendary Edition (110 pages, same place) which I did use. I used one PC out of this RPG and four out of the adventure (pre-generated characters). I used Magic the Gathering cards as the solo engine along with a yes/maybe/no oracle. Here are the highlights of the adventure. The adventure started with the PCs in the town market. They heard two rumors (one of them false) and then walked to the garden of Sforza the Scarlet Dreamer. Tamsin was able to climb the wall to gain access, but the others had to go in through the main entrance.

Their first encounter was a box turtle. They picked him up and put him in a bag. The second encounter was Pumpkin Head. They killed him and soon found a Seal of Cleansing. They continued on and ran into him again. This time Tamsin the PC broke the seal. Pumpkin Head broke in half and then disappeared. Next, the PCs found a scroll of Carbonize. When Turnip Head showed up, Tamsin cast that spell and killed him. The next encounter was Gourd Head and Scarecrow. The PCs won that battle. The PCs burned the two bodies. Moving on, they noticed one trap and were able to avoid it. Rokas used his agility to avoid the Saber Tree. At the Lotus Pond, they were able to collect some raw ingredients for a local drug. Rokas was able to see through an illusion at The Grove.

At this location they did find the NPC Naram rooted into the ground (he had been a bad boy). Tamsin freed him with a dispel magic. He joined the party and told them about The Heart of Aminah. He led them to the well and Rokas and Sal went down the well using Naram’s silk rope. Down there they encountered Aminah. She told them her story and gave them The Heart (a gem). Sal sensed that her story was “off”. They went back up and had a discussion. They decide to leave the garden. A few minutes later Naram makes a grab for the gem (I told you he was bad). The entire group ends up on the ground, fighting for the gem. Naram ends up dead along with Tamsin. The PCs loot the bodies and head back to town. They sell the gem and the raw ingredients at the marketplace. They keep the box turtle. At the tavern, they “pour one out” for Tamsin. Maybe you will have better luck.

Super High School RPG

Date Added: 09/12/2023 18:21:13

Spoilers - You have been warned - For the last few days, I have soloed my way through Super High School RPG (150 pages). I used the adventure that is included in this document. I used a yes/maybe/no oracle as my solo engine. I created four PCs to take on this adventure. This fun adventure started with a meet and greet. They took a tour around the campus which was followed by a reception. The good time ended when they received a message from the villain. People got sick and the caterers became aggressive showing their true colors. Three of the three PCs picked up folding chairs and used them as weapons. Mystara used her combat spell. They defeated the caterers. Silent Shadows the NPC took the sick students to the bowling alley. The police were called to take away the caterers.

During the waiting time, Gwen successfully questioned the caterers about the events leading up to this. Gwen discovered that all of the caterers came from Camden in England. Della found broken bottles in the area where the caterers prepared the food and drink. She used her Sharp Sense of Smell on the drops of liquid. Gwen used her Contact to get transportation, and the team eventually arrived in Camden. They successfully restrained the frenzied mob (affected by the drug). The PCs used their agility to get past the next mob. Della’s sense of smell finally got them to an old factory which had been converted to a mall on the inside. To get past the guards, they used their folding chairs again with the one combat spell (Mystara).

On the inside, the had to deal with goons and the villain. Carl’s Mirage spell of a large demon did not scare away the goons. The PCs did defeat the villain with their usual battle tactics. Two bystanders got hurt by the goons before they gave up. Gwen healed them using her Breath of Life. So, mission accomplished.

Note – in my opinion this should be a d8 system instead of a d6 system. Yes, the difficulty numbers would need to be increased.

Han Cluster RPG: Jumpstart
Publisher: Ede Sol Games
by Bob V. G. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 09/07/2023 20:54:47

Spoilers - - - -

For the last few days, I have soloed my way through Han Cluster RPG: Jumpstart (30 pages at DriveThruRPG). I used the adventure and the PCs that are included in this jumpstart. I changed four lines in Hulks and Horrors (same place) to make the 156 page document my solo engine. So, my one word for describing this would be “challenging”. My six PCs started in three different locations that were very far apart. They do have the ability to become uncarapaced. I can only compare it to having an out-of-the-body experience except the X-ghost can use special equipment and can attempt to effect the physical world. Edo, Coral, and her Nex-pet started on a transport ship. They ended up on the planet Onyx inside a broadcast hub. They were captured. The Nex-pet shut down the power at the hub. It had its own agenda. Sirka and Trey started on a Light Freighter. They ended up in a ship to ship battle, but their ship malfunctioned and the enemy ship got away.

Krak and Secayda started on a space elevator at the Hope Expedition Museum in the city of Novus on Edenic. Secayda had scored rare tickets for her and Krak to tour the ancient Hope Expedition colony ship Thora in geo-synchronous orbit over the planet Edenic. They eventually had to use their electronic skills to take control of the rogue ship Thora. They were successful and avoided a huge disaster. Days later, the Han Cluster authorities are able to piece together what had happened and Krak and Secayda are hailed as the heroes of Edenic by its individual citizens, by its government, and even by the members of its military.

Give this a try!

Tri-Stat Core Role-Playing Game System - JPG840
Publisher: Dyskami Publishing Company
by Bob V. G. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 09/05/2023 20:26:58

Recently, I soloed my way through [BESM 4] Lifewish: Ravenheart - Module Runner Book (15 pages, DriveThruRPG) a fantasy adventure for Big Eyes, Small Mouth: The Anime and Manga Role-Playing Game. Instead, I used TRI-STAT CORE Role-Playing Game System. I used the Solo Adventure Resource: The Dungeon Oracle (Paul Bimler) as my solo engine. I created three characters which could fight and use magic. The adventure started when the three PCs got back to their town. They had been at magic school. The townsfolk don’t really think being a wizard is real job, so they made the PCs dig a grave for a recently deceased adventurer (apparently, that is not a real job either). While they were digging, they unearthed The Spirit Blade. They then went back to their place to study the weapon. Next, Zara appeared and gave them their first quest – Find the Cloud Stairs And Climb It. The PCs started their journey and soon encountered Weigela the Peddler. They were not impressed with his wares. He was insulted by this. He attacked. Bella was wounded, but they knocked their opponent out. They looked through his stuff and took one item : The Fuse Mask.

Next, the PCs talk to a group of women who are gossiping. The PCs ask questions about their quest and they are referred to The Old Man. When they find him, he tells them they “look like young heroes” and gives them The Invisibility Mask. They continue their journey and come to a pond. There they talk to a large frog. They have a hard time understanding him. He asks them a riddle and they correctly answer it. The reward is The Eyeglass Mask. The next encounter is The Tree Titan. The PCs put on their wizard hats and Della casts the phobia spell on the titan. It now has a fear of hats. The titan changes direction and moves on. They now journey on to the desert. They explore the ruins and find The Foresight Mask. At this point, Arris finds them and gives them the Shield Mask. In the middle of the ruins they find an inscription, translate it, read the riddle, and answer it. A wall moves revealing the Cannon Mask. They take it.

Moving on, they find a stream and in it – The Translator Mask. Next, they find a secret path which leads them up to the top of the plateau where they have an encounter with Lightning Wolves. When the situation is under control, the wolves give them valuable information. The PCs then move on, find The Cloud Stairs, go up, summon The Skybird, and then talk to the titan (the phobia spell has expired). He gives them a quest, they complete it and he helps them find the Tree Clan Village. Once there, they restore the monument. What follows is the Celebration Feast and Bella gets healed.

Crossing Guard
Publisher: Chaosium
by Bob V. G. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/31/2023 19:20:11

The following contains spoilers. You have been warned. . . Recently, I soloed my way through Crossing Guard (31 pages, DriveThruRPG) a modern adventure for Call of Cthulhu set in the year 2023. I did use the six PCs that are provided. Because this was not your normal group of investigators and because they had interesting backgrounds, I used Player Emulator (with Tags) as my solo engine. My characters were kept busy since they had investigating to do and a gaming convention to attend (I love game conventions). My characters also had a “handler”, Mr. Ed, who was a big help. As soon as they arrived in town, they started their research. Next, they did convention registration at the Golden Nugget Hotel, followed by a meeting with Mr. Ed.

That night they went to potter’s field – the place where the creature was sighted. They did not see anything, so they left after two hours. They met Ed again at the hotel. They knew that the drug Syke was part of the problem. Two of the PCs take the drug. The PC Kevin, being a party animal, takes three. When the others went to bed he wanders the streets and photographs women (51 of them). He is feeling good. On the second day, they start it off by questioning a Syke addict. The spend the rest of the day enjoying the convention. That night they arrive at potter’s field again and Kevin sees the creature (his sanity goes down). He runs away and the others follow him. Next, they follow a lead which leads them to the Nevada Historical Cemetery Society. It is all locked up and they are unable to use their skills to disarm the alarms (bad rolls of the dice). So, they bust a window and crawl in. They quickly grab some clues and head back to the hotel. They read this new material and discover that there is a rune underneath a special obelisk in potter’s field. They also know that the rune has a design error.

The next day they start at the con. In the evening, they are back at the field with some tools. This time they try a different tactic. This is Jason the PC’s idea. Arturo talks to the creature (he had taken one of the pills). Jason tells him what to say. The creature complains about the messed up rune. So, they decide to destroy the rune. It takes them about thirty minutes. The creature is pleased. The PCs don’t know it, but they have helped an evil sorcerer and his minion (Oops!). The next day, the PCs attend the closing ceremony at the con. Kevin tries to find more of the teal pills (Syke). Good times! Oh, and drugs are bad!

Under Western Skies: 2D6 Adventure on America's Frontier

Date Added: 08/28/2023 07:37:20

Recently, I soloed my way through Under Western Skies: 2D6 Adventure on America's Frontier (72 pages). This is a 2d6 system – basically, it is Traveller in the wild west. For the adventure, I playtested a solo adventure by Victor Paiam. I did use a yes/maybe/no oracle because I always have questions. So, I did have a rough start. With this RPG system, your character can die during the character creation phase. My first rogue died during his first term. My second rogue died during his second term. Next, I tried a soldier. He had only been working a few weeks and then he was the victim of an accident. His eye was ruined. When he recovered from that, he went out adventuring. He died on the seventh day. My next character was Bill the agent. He was not lucky either. His wife died soon after they were married. He frequently dreamed about her. He worked for two months as an agent and was injured. He was off work for one month and then he went back at it. He died on the eleventh day trying to rescue his friend. So, my advice to you is to not play one character. Try playing with a gunfighter and a physician. Good luck!

Ghost Club RPG
Publisher: Andrew Dowell
by Bob V. G. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/24/2023 14:56:15

For the last few days, I have soloed my way through the Ghost Club RPG (144 pages). This is a 2d6 system (PBtA). I used the Plot Unfolding Machine (9 pages, free/pay what you want at DriveThruRPG) as the solo engine. The exciting adventure that I used is included in the rules. I did use the five characters provided and I used their nicknames. The adventure started when the kids (PCs) were walking down Main Street. The creepy owner (Mr. Castle) of Castle Pawn Shop stepped out of his store and got in their way. He told them that he had a few used toys for sale. They went in, pooled their money, and Destroyer bought a used yo-yo. Outside, he practiced a bit and then did the trick Walk the Dog. The yo-yo escaped from the string and took off down they street. The PCs ran after it. It went a few blocks before entering The House of 11th Avenue.

They followed it inside and explored the first room. In this room they had to deal with an illusion, they found their first clue, and they found a silver fork. In the second room they had to deal with another illusion and a hallucination, found their second clue, salty French fries, and a traffic cone. They were not in the third room long, because a ghost shark attacked the room from outside and they had to deal with a wave of fear. In the fourth room they found a ghost coin, their third clue, stairs that went up, and stairs that went down. They went down and encountered a strange room. In this room they found super crunchy snacks and the fourth clue. At this point, the wisp came out of a colored box and attacked the group. The PCs were able to use their four banishment items to destroy the wisp. They then went back to Mr. Castle. He bought the stuff they had found and gave them a cash bonus. They now had $247. They would have had more, but they had to pay for property damage (oops). He did ask them a lot of detailed questions and they wondered who this guy really is.

Can your group beat this $247 score?

Rovers & Riches
Publisher: Operant Game Lab

Date Added: 08/22/2023 04:57:24

For the past few days, I have soloed my way through The Burrows of Blemmyae (27 pages, free at DriveThruRPG). This adventure is for Dungeon Crawl Classics, but I used Rovers & Riches (33 pages). I used Magic the Gathering cards as my solo engine. I created twelve 0th-level characters to take on this funnel adventure. Here are the highlights of the adventure.

The adventure started with the PCs looking for fame and fortune on the other side of the ocean. Unfortunately, they were press-ganged by captain Serenus. A storm destroyed the ship. The PCs woke up on a beach. They looted drowned pirate bodies for weapons which they then used to kill two giant crabs and an enormous crab. A few Blemms helped them. One PC died during this battle. The PCs followed the Blemms back to their village (holes in the ground). They enjoyed cooked crab and gained information. At this point, four Blemms joined the PCs. This new group then started heading to the ruins of a temple. On the way, they battled five Sciapods. The PCs won, but one of the PCs died. At the temple, four pirates were doing a ritual for Serenus. The pirates finished the ritual and were then forced into combat. Two Blemms died during this battle. The PCs then did what Serenus had done: went into the portal. This put the group in THE HEAD OF SAR-SHAMUR.

In the mouth, they fought and killed Serenus and The Tongue. Two Blemms died in this battle. Ajax and Allen could not get up the Mucous Slope, so they explored a bit and then just waited for something to happen. In THE HEMISPHERE OF VISION, Jelly lost the game and died. Agatha won and had two stats get an increase. In THE CHAMBER OF INNER THOUGHT, the PCs encountered the almost God-like Sar-Shamur. They followed his request and used the magic (cursed) sword that they had found earlier, to cut off his head. This put the nine surviving PCs in the middle of a halfling prairie (teleport). This means that they are all now first level.

Give this fun RPG a try!

Recently, I soloed my way through Apartment 71 (30 pages) an adventure for Call of Cthulhu. I soloed this with the Plot Unfolding Machine (same place). I did use the four PCs that are provided: bookstore owner, law student, military police officer, and an author. These four were at a condo association meeting (this qualifies for horror) when they were notified of a problem with one of the units. The groundskeeper gives them some additional information and leads them to a storage room. They find some clues and a key and move on towards apartment 71. When they get to that floor they meet Jaime and his cat and get more information. The PCs use the key and enter the apartment and the cat leads the way.

So, the apartment ends up being a pocket dimension (I love pocket dimensions). Each room is stuck in a different decade and the PCs are stuck here (the door is gone). The PCs explore and gather more information. In one room they find a depressed woman and in another room they find a man suffering from drug withdrawal. Things really get interesting in the master bedroom. In here they find a vain actress (Alma) performing a ritual. The ritual was supposed to make her beautiful again. Instead, the pocket dimension was created and time stopped inside it (so, her appearance will not change). The current ritual creates a barrier so that she is protected. On the floor the PCs see the rune circle. There are marble sized crystals which have been precisely place on the rune circle. The PCs can not get to her or the runes, but the cat can. It smacks a crystal and it rolls to the far side of the room. The magic barrier comes down, the pocket dimension fractures, and Alma screams. The PCs decide to make a run for it. They have trouble finding the exit, but the cat helps them. So, the PCs and cat do escape. They forget about the two lost tenants who are still in there. They are now still in there along with Alma, in the fractured pocket dimension. The PCs did lose some sanity, but earned some experience. The complaints have stopped concerning that apartment so the condo association is happy about that.

Give this a try!

Recently, I soloed my way through Braunhaven Manor for the Indigent (12 pages at DriveThruRPG, on sale at the moment) an adventure for Old-School Essentials. The RPG system I used to play it was Tunnels & Trolls Seventh Edition (122 pages, same place). I soloed this with the FlexTale Solo Adventuring Toolkit. The last time I played these three angels was in June of 2022. This adventure started with a leprechaun entering a tavern and talking to three angels (this is not a joke). The angels had heard of a ruins and wanted to hire a healer (yes, the leprechaun, Boru, can cast healing spells).

Soon after this, the adventuring party was approached by a town council member. The offer was for the group to clean out a manor so that they could live there. The PCs accepted the offer and walked over to the manor. First they explored the stables. They did find an extra-heavy longbow that Asmal the angel could use. When they exited the stables, they were attacked by a manticore. They killed it. They then entered the manor from the back entrance and started exploring rooms. They killed two giant spiders and eventually found a secret door. It led to a living quarters occupied by a Deep Gnome. He challenged Boru to a game of riddles. The winner would get the other’s ring. Boru won the game and acquired a Royal Lion Shield Badge Ring.

A few rooms later and the PCs triggered a magic mouth trap. It announced “Intruders!” and a Stingaree came down the stairs. The PCs killed it. In room thirteen they found a servant who did answer all of their questions. In room ten, they triggered an ice cone (not an ice cream cone) trap. They all took damage and Boru lost half of his hit points. He cast a spell to heal himself. In room 17 they found 250 silver pieces. They explored more rooms and found a beggar chained up, a mermaid chained up, and no keys. They avoided the blade trap in the next room. This was followed by two giant wasps.

After killing the bugs they found the library. Boru was excited to find six spellbooks. In the last room they found a gargoyle armed with a rooster and oil of transformation. The PCs tried to befriend him. He refused to talk. The PCs left the room, but remembered that they needed to find some keys. So, they killed the gargoyle and they did find the keys. They freed the two captives and they all went outside. The mermaid, still carrying her two water buckets, told the group that if she was returned to her people, they would be given a reward. The PCs accepted this quest. To be continued.

Note - The rooster is following the PCs.
