Sentinel Comics: The Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook

I had no interest in the Sentinel Comics setting and character, so I spent two years trying out everything I could (Mutants & Masterminds, Icons, MASKS, and the newer Champions--I had 2nd ed. in the 80s) before giving SCRPG a shot. I joined an online Play-by-Forum and played for 6 months before we had to end it. I didn't want to stop--it's such a great system (and the other reviewers can give you more details). So now I am using Mythic Game Master Emulator and playing a solo campaign.

Other systems try to either codify comic book physics or go heavy interpersonal drama (MASKS--hated it), but SCRPG somehow lets you be specific in your hero and villain creations without limiting you in how your chosen powers work. In fact, every action is a mini-game in how creatively you can justify the use of one Power with one Quality (like Self-Disciplined, Close Combat, or Leadership) to get the best result. With practice and experience, you'll discover the great combos and synergies your specific Abilities (specific game actions "themed" by one of your Powers or Qualities) possess when combined with your others, or the ones possessed by teammates.

I could go on...

It's pretty easy to learn, but has depth. The only con is that the GM side is pretty demanding. Not in prep work, but in getting a good feel for how much to throw at the PCs to properly challenge them and what kinds of Twists to throw at them that improve the experience. I learned by being a player and picked it up from our GM's hits and misses.

Underrated game that needs more love and probably more promotion from the publisher.

I was actually a bit skeptical when I first read through this book. When I read the rules for combat with a solo PC, they didn't sound fun at all...

THEN I ACTUALLY PLAYED... This is a FANTASTIC resource for playing solo Forbidden Lands. Although I don't use the oracles in the book (I use Rory's Story Cubes and the Mythic Gamemaster Emulator, which are actually very similar to what is recommended), I HIGHLY recommend using all of the other resources provided (yes, even the suggestions for solo combat--play and you'll agree).

My favorite parts: CHARACTER CREATION - The recommended boost to Talents was especially helpful for a Sorcerer just starting out, and the suggestion to start with NPC allies provided both help and story ideas.

ADVENTURE SITES - Good info about how to handle a big part of Forbidden Lands--the Adventure Sites. I found this info useful for both randomly generated and pre-written sites.

JOURNALING - I went so far as to buy a journal to record my adventure and it is a big part of the OSR feel for me. Good suggestion.

This is a fantastic resource, especially if you use Delves a lot for your game. I especially like that I now have more options for my pirate character--the Sea Voyage domain, especially, for when I want to use a Delve in place of undertaking a journey.

The layout is solid (even if the fonts don't match the Ironsworn books 100%), and it is obvious that a lot of creativity and work went into the content.

If you want to expand your Delve options without spending the time creating your own custom themes and domains, this is HIGHLY recommended.

This is a solid addition to your set of Ironsworn tools. More tables!!! IMO, the most useful additional tables are the Quick Settlement Name tables and the Ironlander Names tables. Those get the most use in a standard campaign, so you are most likely to need more options. Also of note is a new type of table for NPC Conversation Topics. I can see myself trying out this table for times when my characters are making camp or during uneventful stretches on journeys.

My only minor criticism is the layout and graphic design are a little off in places--doesn't affect functionality at all, though. But I'd honestly rather an imperfect pdf for $2 than a fancy doc for $10.
