Goblin Crag: Level One T&T GM adv
Publisher: Flying Buffalo
by MARK G. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/26/2020 11:39:13

Goblin Crag is a GM-led adventure, and has been around a good while, but this new edition really gives it a great facelift. It's a good introductory adventure, and a good way to kick off your own campaign if you're a GM without having to build and stock a full dungeon all by yourself. It is a good place to start, and to get used to Tunnels and Trolls mechanics. It can be run with any version of the Tunnels and Trolls rules, including the free rules, the mini-rules, or the Deluxe rules (which are the best, as it give the players far more options for more fun and more trouble!)

Sword for Hire T&T solo
Publisher: Flying Buffalo
by MARK G. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/26/2020 11:35:32

Sword for Hire and its companion adventure, Blue Frog Tavern, are two of my favorite solos among all the solo adventures for Tunnels and Trolls. Sword for Hire is a great introduction to Trollworld and T&T. It's usable with the mini-rules and the free rules as well as with more complete rule sets like Deluxe Tunnels and Trolls.

The adventure has many paths, so it's got great replay value even if you don't die (though you probably will, repeatedly). The characters, situations, and the adventure itself are a lot of fun, this is no typical dungeon crawling slog, there are many highlights along the way, good humor, and good adventure.

If you run group games, running yourself through this and Blue Frog Tavern is a great inspiration for ideas, situations, and mechanics to add to your game--it should be in every GM's library!

If you're running Tunnels and Trolls (in any edition) this compendium is an invaluable addition. It brings together articles from Sorceror's Apprentice magazine and elsewhere, including both GM and solo adventures that are no longer available elsewhere unless you hunt down a bunch of 30+ year old magazines. The art is updated, there are some errata corrected, and it makes a great inspiration and kickstart to any campaign.

TrollsZine 1

Date Added: 08/26/2020 11:25:28

This issue of Trollszine is a MUST HAVE for any gamemaster running any of the T&T family of games (Monsters! Monsters!, Mercenaries Spies and Private Eyes, Stay Alive!, etc.) for the "Dare to DARO" article by Dan Prentice. It describes, far better than the rules themselves, how Stunting works in Tunnels and Trolls, and gives the GM the biggest tool they have to distinguish a game of T&T from all those other RPGs.

The rest of the content in this and the other Trollszines is great, too, but seriously, if you haven't read DARE TO DARO, you are missing a piece of the rulebook!

If you play Tunnels and Trolls or Monsters! Monsters!, you will find this book essential. It contains valuable information on Trollworld's Uruk cultures as well as the spells of their shamans.

I recommend all the kindred spellbooks, but I feel this one is the best and most useful for expanding your game.

Monsters! Monsters! 2nd Edition
Publisher: Trollgodfather Press
by MARK G. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 05/27/2020 18:39:52

What a great update to a great game! Monsters! Monsters! was a breakthrough in its time. Before the Reverse Dungeon, it let players play "The Other Side" as all sorts of fun creatures, making the lives of innocent villagers, uptight nobles, and self-important adventurers just as troublesome as they deserve.

Now we have a new updated version, after several decades! It's compatible with Deluxe Tunnels and Trolls, allowing all sorts of material developed for that game to be plug and play with this. plus, this material can all be dropped into dT&T! Add new monsters, more personalized monsters into dT&T, or, play the other side of the dungeon as the gamemaster sends adventurers in to loot your humble underground abode (or decaying castle, haunted wood, fetid swamp, fevered nightmare, or...You name it.)

The art and design are updated as well as the rules, giving a clean modern look to this great game. Magic for the creatures, and spells, are updated as well as powers and abilities.

Take a walk on the wild side, let your hair down, and let the Monsters of the Id run free at your game table!

Thank you for the great review Mark, its great to see so many of you embracing this new edition. I just wanted to add that really this game is compatible with any of the previous editions of T&T and that our goal was to keep it in the same looser spirit of the original version of M!M! It really gratifying to see that many of you "get" what we are trying to do with this. Now you can refer to you favorite edition of T&T and pick and choose what you might want to add or subtract, or come up with your own version of how you might alter aspects of M!M! to suit your needs - Enjoy! Dark Temple T&T solo
Publisher: Flying Buffalo
by MARK G. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 04/08/2020 14:38:52

A Mini-Campaign Solo Adventure Dark Temple is exemplary of what a solo adventure should be. It's exciting, fun to play, and incorporates a lot of different landscapes into several different adventures. It uses the Tunnels and Trolls rules to great effect, avoiding the tedium that many solos fall into where the adventure becomes a grind. In Dark Temple, long sections of travel are dealt with quickly and in a way that keeps it interesting, while intense encounters still get all the attention they deserve.

Dark Temple includes both overland and dungeon-style adventure. It's suitable for all the standard character types--Warrior, Wizard, Rogue (and Paragon or Warrior-Wizard), and plays very well with all Types. It can be played with any version of the T&T rules you care to try it with, the author says from 5th edition through Deluxe, but I'm betting a 4th edition character would fare well here, too. Significantly, this adventure plays excellently with spell-casters, allowing them to do their thing without being hampered by strict spell limitations.

The choices allow for your character to express their character throughout. Are you cagey and careful, full of bravado and bluster, or whatever, there are choices here that will suit your character's character. The encounters are well designed, and give your character a chance to approach them in different ways.

There are several paths through the adventure, and while there are points where several paths come together, there is a lot of replay value here as well. For less than the price of a movie ticket (which is unavailable as I write this because of Coronavirus shutdowns), you get many hours of great roleplaying entertainment.

For DM's, too If you're a DM, I recommend picking this up to look at how it handles resolution on many of the situations, it makes a good primer on DMimg a T&T game as well. You could equally well run it as a DMed adventure with a group, though you'll probably want to make some notes, unscramble some of the key paragraphs for yourself, and scale the encounters for your players.

Alice in Weirdworld T&T solo w/mini rules
Publisher: Flying Buffalo
by MARK G. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 04/02/2020 22:44:53

This is a great adventure for a newly made T&T character to get a start. The T&T mini rules are included with the adventure, so it can be used as a stand-alone product.

It's less deadly than many T&T adventures, though the risk of death or reduced attributes are there. It's a good opportunity to gear up a new character and toughen them before going on to other adventures.

It falls short of five stars for me only because it strongly binds your character to Alice, without any opportunity to vary even on basic character motivations. My most recent run through was with a character I called m'Aliss, a malevolent little girl. Even she wasn't a fit for the imputed character of the story. I'm used to adventures that focus on choices and consequences, leaving character reasoning up to the player. Not so here. It's worsened in places by long winded detail about why you do things that way.

That said, it's still a good adventure with a lot of replay value, and a good place to send a starting character without expecting them to get squashed on move 3.

Thanks for the review Mark - Part of the thinking on this solo is two-fold: one was to help people who had never played a solo before get a better feel for how they work, but have it a little more guided. The other part is that is making it feel more like reading the Alice in Wonderland adventure and Alice is such a large part of that story, we did make her presence stronger in the solo. Although you can make many. many choices on what Alice does and where she goes while you are playing the adventure. We think a lot of people will try this solo adventure just because it is connected to the Alice in Wonderland mythos and we hope that they will then try our other solos. Its also part of making it "Weirdworld". This is a different sort of solo and a bit "weird" We tried several new innovations, like the long list of items that your character can find and use, the fact that it is based on a literary work and a few other innovations. Again, thanks for your feedback!

The Non-Human Spell Book
Publisher: Trollgodfather Press
by MARK G. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 04/01/2020 01:35:32

I'm a fan of Too Many Spells, so I jumped right over and bought it. I've got the various kindred spell books that Ken has released as well.

The introduction describes the spells as ones that got edited out of DT&T, or changed in DT&T. Many of the spells are represented in DT&T, but at different levels, costs, effects, etc.

There are 42 spells in the book. 17 do not appear in any form in the DT&T rulebook. (40%) 11 appear in the DT&T book in modified form. 14 appear in the DT&T book in pretty much the same form.

There are a lot of good spells that fill gaps in the DT&T list. DT&T in many ways feels like it should have a spell that does one thing or another at a particular level and with a particular cost and power where it doesn't.

I think you'll find a good selection of those here.

There are some specialty spells in here, particularly ones that are more conducive to role playing than game mechanics. But the spells that really sell me on this book are the ones that are going to get used a lot that fill those gaps in the relatively short DT&T spell list.

There are a lot you'll recognize from 7th edition or 7.5, if you've played those. And ones that were in 5.x but not Deluxe.

Each spell lists the kindred it is associated with. In many cases, it's a spell that is in DT&T, but at a different level and cost for a particular kindred. The new spells likewise have a kindred associated with them. This is good campaign fodder, as a spell that's relatively high level and expensive from the Wizard's Guild might be a lot cheaper and easier to cast IF the character can schmooze it out of a spellcaster of the right kindred.

Many old favorites are back. Like "That's a Natty Beard." It's a signature spell for T&T, it's hard to believe it got left out of the core book.

The spells run from 1st through 4th level. In my opinion, low levels spells are the most valuable because they're the most used. So you won't find a "fixed" Death spell in here like the hardcore 7th edition version of Death Spell #9, but you will find some nice additions for your low level players, either of the listed kindred or "borrowed" from another.

The art consists of 3D renders by Robin Stacey (Greywulf), and line art by a number of artists, spread through the book.

MSPE-Mercenaries, Spies and Private Eyes: Combined Edition RPG
Publisher: Flying Buffalo
by MARK G. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/05/2020 16:22:30

Mercenaries, Spies, and Private Eyes has shouldered aside other games in its genre from the gaming table. Its flexibility, modularity, and most of all =playability= make it my first choice for secret agents, pulp adventure (think Ondiana Jones or Romancing the Stone), detective mysteries, spy thrillers, Cold War adventures (Tom Clancy, Harold Coyle, etc.) and similar games. In the time it takes to get characters in play in other systems, we can be in the thick of it with MSPE.

Players love the flexibility--they can make their character whatever they want quickly and easily without having to search endlessly through rules or go so loosy-goosy that the character is practically undefined.

As gamemaster, I don't get buried in prep work. I can start with a concept and be ready to play in the time it takes for my players to drive over, with a few encounters laid out and some interesting NPCs to keep the action and intrigue rolling.

It's all in one book, you won't go broke buying supplements.

T&T Solo Design Guidelines: HOW TO WRITE A SOLO
Publisher: Flying Buffalo
by Mark G. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/06/2019 21:31:59

What a gem this is!

The core of this is a series of submission guidelines to authors of solo adventures written by Mike Stackpole, plus additions from Ken St. Andre and Rick Loomis. These guidelines aren't just tips on writing solo adventures, they are excellent guides to writing any adventure, for any game. They cover creating flexible adventure paths that avoid railroading and repetition, creating interesting approaches to failure that leave characters open to more adventure. They cover making adventures resilient to powerful magic items and spells, as well as maintaining an adventure at a heroic level, rather than devolving into choosing directions to travel at random.

There is also a collection of the magic items that could be awarded from the early Tunnels and Trolls adventures, all collected in one place. This is a great resource for T&T GMs wanting to add pre-existing items to their games, or as a list to compare against when building something unique.

Though brief, this is chock full of information. The bulk is written by Mike Stackpole, after all, and the one page guide by Ken St. Andre that adds to this is also rich in guidance for an adventure author.

Anyone writing adventures either solo or GMed for any system will find this to be a treasure box!

Trollstone Caverns: Lair of the Silver Serpent T&T gm adv
Publisher: Flying Buffalo
by Mark G. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/20/2019 04:24:38

This is a great adventure to get started with Deluxe Tunnels and Trolls. Thanks to the inclusion of the Tunnels and Trolls Mini-Rules, you don't need anything else to start playing.

This adds to the library of gamemaster-led adventures for Tunnels and Trolls. T&T has many solo adventures as well, but this is a solid addition to the GM adventures for T&T's current edition, DT&T. It is an updated and changed version of the Trollstone Caverns adventure from 5th edition T&T. In-game, 200 years have passed since the original adventure, and there have been changes to the Caverns as a result.

The adventure is a solid one for a low-level party of "delvers". The maps and art are outstanding, including art by Simon Tranter, Steve Crompton, and Liz Danforth. It can be run in a single session, or broken into a couple of shorter ones. There are pre-generated characters included for a quick start, but for T&T it's quick to generate new characters, so if you don't mind a little extra time and personalization, it doesn't take long. It's also easy for the GM to build on or modify, if they wish.

Grab it, add it to your campaign, or use it to start one!

I love this book. A series of tight little maps drawn old-school style, each one broken out by room/area, so that each section can be revealed to players by what they can see. There are extensive note pages for the DM to use when populating the maps, setting up traps, creatures, treasure, etc.

Look at the hand drawn map, dream a bit, then start filling in and you've got yourself a full complex for a dungeon-crawling campaign!

I'm looking forward to the additional volumes. :)
