Interesting set-up, the art is nice and the whole thing has an anime/manga feel to it.

the tag-line: "hardcore, hardboiled horror set in the weird, weird west" is what drew me to the title. i love my horror and i love my westerns. i especially love when the genres are fused.

unfortunately, there was nothing even remotely western in this zero issue--clothing, furnature, backgrounds, a horse. perhaps west refers to the direction and not the period as i had hoped.

having said that, the art was good and what was presented was clear, but there wasn't enough meat to the story to tell if future issues would be what i am looking for. not totally unexpected for an introductory piece. i realize the publisher has to save something for the series.

based on the zero issue this probably isn't for me.

my review is based on what i saw, not what i didn't see.

I downloaded #0 as a means to check out the series and was very happily surprised. I'm still relatively new to the whole comic/manga/graphic novels scene, but I think this was interestingly writing and wonderfully drawn. I'm appreciative of well drawn comics, since I know I'll be reading it on the computer screen. Needing to scroll up and down to get a view of the whole dialog and artwork on a page can be disorienting sometimes. Edition #0 was not one of those times. Not only that, but the manga left me wanting to read more, so I'll be downloading issue #1 soon. Very soon.

This is a review for both issues #0 and #1

Artwork: 4.5 out of 5 Fans of the artwork found in Hellsing and Priest gather around because this book is right up your alley. This book had its moments where I didn’t quite see what was going on in the action scenes, but there might have been only 2 max. This book is drop dead GORE-Geous plain and simple. While it does look like most Manga style titles, it’s consistent from panel to panel , and the death scenes are to die for. Character design is solid, but I have to bow down to the decapitation scene in issue #1. I love the look on these books.

Story: 4.0 out of 5 The story here is something I have been wanting for a while in comics, a serial killer story that has legs. The dialogue had its choppy moments, but overall moved me along at a great pace. A serious and yet cheesy, but great cheesy, highlight was during the decapitation scene because the wording was perfect. The written action, the suspense, the poetry, it is all a mix that is blossoming as the issues go on. I have no doubt that issue #2 and beyond will drive this book and it the same level as the artwork.

Dying Breath: 4.5 out of 5 This book was an unexpected surprise. I am shocked that it’s not in Antarctic Press’ line of horror titles (yet). I love the concept, I love the setting, I love the writing and I love the artwork. I want more of this and I want it now. This book is being done right so far. It is hitting on a subject in horror comics that is not often done and that is a shame. If you want a serial killer title that is on track to having it all you need to read this book.

“Drop Dead Dangerous” #0 is exactly what a zero issue should be. The book sets up the main characters and the world they inhabit, and lays the foundation for where the series will be going in the future.

“DDD” takes place in a version of the Wild West, where a serial killer called “The Raven” has been killing young women and scrawling quotes from Poe in their blood next to the bodies. As the story opens, The Raven is about to take his latest victim, who happens to be the wife of Jack Smith, a deputy sheriff who arrives just in time to save his wife and kill The Raven. After the traumatic incident, Jack quits his job and opens his own private investigation practice, so he can spend more time with this wife, who hasn’t been the same since her near-death experience. Jack’s first case in his new job involves a murder that fits the m.o. of The Raven, who Jack killed one year ago.

As I mentioned above, writer Chad Cabrera sets up the series very well with this zero issue. Artist Mike Banting has a manga style, and he really pulls off the “wild west meets pulp noir” feel well.

“Drop Dead Dangerous” #0 is a great read that has hooked me for the upcoming series. Definitely worth checking out.
