The Devil's to Pay!

Print n Play version. It printed out quite nicely and I was able to make an attractive game that looks as good as it plays. The game itself is a chit-pull system that works very well. Units are half-Brigades, double sided and Artillery Batteries. Leaders (Corps and Division Commanders) are chits, rated by performance, and when their chit is drawn, they roll a die to see how many of their subordinate units can activate. Between the leaders and the tactics chits, units can activate multiple times in a turn. Step reduction combat system is not terribly bloody as it takes a few hits to destroy a unit but it simulates ACW combat as I envision it. Good game, worth the work put into the PnP version.

This is an excellent set of rules. Well written and easy to understand, it will make play run smoothly, quickly and efficiently. A simple task resolution system that applies to combat it lends itself to both narrative play and combat resolution.

Skills are grouped into easy to adapt sets and hinderances and edges are explained in a coincise manner. Purchasing equipment and dealing damage is done in a straightforward way.

They have several settings already fleshed out (Deadlands Reloaded, Solomon Kane, Weird War, Ripper, Space 1889, etc) and it can easily be adapted to any sandbox setting with a minimum of effort.

I really like these rules and I glad I ran across them.

Heroes of Rura-Tonga

This is 108 pages of pulp goodness. The first 37 pages is a combination of fluff on the island of Rura-Tonga itself and its inhabitants and historical data on the Imperial Japanese Navy with some other technical data on seaplanes. Fair enough. Then we get to the adventures. There are five of them and a set of notional adventurers to star in them. There is an island of Zombies, there are Japanese genetic experiments gone wrong, a hunt for a lost treasure (which is guarded by.....something), a race to prevent a volcano from erupting (using mystical means) and what are the Japanese doing on that island where the fishermen refuse to go?

There are notional adventurers using the Any-System Key (included in the last 2 pages of the book) so that you can easily adapt this to whatever pulp system you are using (Amazing Adventures is what I use, the HEX Ubiquity system would work too). There are maps with each adventure and they are repeated again at the end of the book so you can print them separately and give them to your players. There are period photographs rather than drawn artwork (an excellent design choice).

This is a very well done book. Highly recommended.

Scarlet Heroes

This is a really good solo/single player system. It is well thought out, with consideration given to all the aspects of one player combating a large number of foes. The weakest part of the game is the attempt at a setting (the World of the Red Tide) which is kind of a strange hybrid of Asian/Nordic/something else cultures that probably doesnt resonante with a western audience. This, of course, nuances the monsters and magic that is in the system to something that again, just doesnt resonate with me.

But...you can toss all that out and readjust the monsters from your D&D, Pathfinder, C&C or whatever and work your home brew campaign, so it is all good. Full disclosure, I play Castles and Crusades (mostly solo) and I haven't found any particular issue with adjusting to this type of a combat system. The instructions for doing so are quite clear and if you don't wish to spring for this module, you can go cheaper and buy the author's conversion set Solo Heroes, which covers the same ground for any generic D&D style system.

This lays out modifications for playing an adventure with only one party member. It details the five inherent issues with solo adventures then sets out to address them. Highly recommended. Also includes a sample adventure for a single first level character.
