What adventurer doesn't enjoy a good night off to relax? Of course, deep within a drow city and being attentended to by some of the most terrifyingly powerful beings in the Underdark might not put them at ease, but I think regardless they'll have fun with it.

Worth noting, this is a great follow up to Out of the Abyss.

I absolutely loved running this module! My players had a ton of fun acting gauche in such a fancy setting and getting into tons and tons of trouble. There are a lot of places to inject character hooks and drow lore. There are some seriously fun roleplaying moments here, including the drow spreading rumors throughout the party, and rummaging through Lolth's bedchamber.

My biggest complaint is that causing too much trouble for the party results in you being fast-tracked to the final match (by a forcible drow escort). I found myself letting my players get away with a lot more than maybe they should have, just so they'd have the benefit of experiencing all of the fun things to discover.

The adventure is a decent enough portrayal of a masquerade with a twist and a dash of horror elements. But reading the descriptions of the NPCs, it doesn't seem like the author knew any drow canonical lore beyond "They have a thing for spiders". Most of the characters are people who would be typical attendees of a Victorian ball and drow culture is very, very different. So it's all generic characters with some drow paint slapped on them. There's very little that seems uniquely drow here. I don't understand why this was set in Menzoberranzan or why drow were used as the characters.

Hey Dana - you have fair points! Granted, I did not brand this adventure as OSR; I deliberately did not run with canon. This adventure is designed to accommodate different party dynamics. DMs with knowledge of drow lore could easily implement the "generic characters" with a spin relevant to their party members or personal interests. Considering most are minor NPCs, adherence to established lore does not change the outcome for the party. The Masquerade guests are not from the Greater Houses, as the plot twist makes clear. As there is limited 5e lore for Menzo, an understanding of drow lore is not required to run this adventure, but I wanted it to be compatible with any future 5e releases. Thanks for your review!

This module is a very nice one, with creativity, and a lot of work going into creating an adventure that both has enough detail to entertain and also leaves space for Dungeon Masters to expand, reflavor, and alter it in order to make it their own. The premise is a classic one, with twists that make it entertaining, curious, and something to enjoy. The lore is intriguing, leading to ideas which could easily support sequels and spin offs, either by the authors or buy the DMs who run it.

Various NPCs, including Lolth, make for roleplay interactions allowing this to be a nearly combat-free adventure, heavy in roleplay, or one with the potential for lots of battle. Including against the Spider-Queen herself!

Either way, assuming the party survives, it leaves plenty of possible future ideas for more interactions.

My one negative thought was that Lolth was a touch too weak for a goddess, but I place little weight to this downside, as how do you stat a god? And of course, DMs can increase the difficulty of the encounters with ease.

I am definitely looking forward to playing this sometime, both as a player and as a DM.button above

I loved the flavor and atmosphere Carlan and Rogerson brought to this module, making it viable for both one-shot and side-quest use for first-timers as GMs to handle intigrating it into their group play session.

The drow societal interactions felt natural, the role-playing prompts were spot-on in aiding a GM in how to quickly pick them up and not just be cardboard standees, and the depiction of Lolth makes the storytelling decadently devilish. I also feel that some of the potential endings allow for players to try the waters of malady and death for their characters. It can be used as a good setting for creating that discussion. Side note: Borstasia will be an enjoyable and memorable NPC and no-one can tell me otherwise. Side-Lisps, GO!

Definitely a piece for dark intrigue, subterfuge, detective work, and if placed into a running campaign it could allow for fun sub-plots. At the VERY least, it'd be a fun Halloween side-game!

I will offer my only real critique in some minor editing issues: Vumptyr/Volumptyr name consistency, some muddy wording or lines here and there. Nothing crazy, easily tweaked if desired, though only if one wants to buff out any early smudges on this truly great new product.

Besides that nitpick, the adventure seems like great fun, and if I don't personally run it right away, I know a few GMs who'll gladly run it for their groups.

They'll have to buy their own copies though. ;P

The cover art is beautiful, and the concept intrigues any drow lover. But upon cracking the module I noticed the formating made it difficult to read. Stylistic choices aren't consistent throughout the module, and some of the word choices leave much to be desire. The second half of the module feels very linear and forced compared to the first. And while I won't spoil it, there seems to be no real reason to include a certain monster's stat block especially with every that is also described about it in the module.

Overall, the module reads as a good attempt to work in a drow intrigue and there is clearly love put into the details and the authors' takes on the lore. Formatting needs work, and everything needs to be fleshed out in a more consistent manner. (Version 3 Review)
